FIFA adopts new player‑transfer rules for 2027 following Diarra case

FIFA announced that new regulations governing international player transfers will take effect in January 2027. The rules are presented as an objective, transparent and non‑discriminatory framework designed to comply with European Union law after the European Court of Justice found previous FIFA provisions could hinder the free movement of professional footballers.

In parallel, FIFA and former French international Lassana Diarra reached a global settlement that ends all outstanding legal actions. Diarra had sought €65 million in damages stemming from a 2014 contract dispute with Lokomotiv Moscow and subsequent claims against the Belgian club Charleroi. FIFA stated that it does not recognise any liability and that no compensation was paid under the agreement. The settlement closes a decade‑long dispute that prompted FIFA to revise its transfer regulations.

The new regime will operate as a collective bargaining system involving player and club representatives, marking the first international collective employment contract in sport.
