FIFA and FIFPRO Reach Landmark Governance Deal

FIFA and the global players’ union FIFPRO have signed a historic memorandum of understanding that places player representatives inside the FIFA Council and gives them veto powers over key governance matters, including the transfer system and welfare standards. The agreement is described by FIFPRO president Sergio Marchi as “an important step forward for football,” while FIFA president Gianni Infantino called it “about unity, about bringing everyone together.”

The deal follows the settlement of former France midfielder Lassana Diarra’s legal challenge to FIFA’s transfer regulations, which had sought €65 million in damages. By formalising cooperation, the parties aim to modernise transfer rules, strengthen protections against abusive practices, and establish a structured dialogue to reduce future litigation.
