Gianni Infantino Avoids IOC Sanctions in Trump‑Linked Balogun Red Card Case

Human‑rights group FairSquare filed a complaint with the International Olympic Committee alleging that FIFA president Gianni Infantino breached the IOC’s political‑neutrality rules after former U.S. president Donald Trump phoned Infantino to request the reversal of a red‑card suspension for U.S. striker Folarin Balogun during the 2026 World Cup. The IOC, however, indicated there will be no formal investigation and that sanctions are unlikely because internal appeal procedures have not been exhausted and the IOC depends on FIFA for commercial revenue ahead of the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics. UEFA and the Royal Belgian Football Federation, which condemned the decision, have not lodged formal complaints. Infantino rejected the accusations, stating that “they operate autonomously” and that FIFA’s disciplinary committee decides cases independently. The Council of Europe also urged FIFA to open a dialogue on political pressure in football, warning that “when rules are bent under pressure, any result can be called into question.”
