FIFA considers expanding World Cup to 64 teams

FIFA is considering a significant expansion of the World Cup, potentially increasing the number of participating national teams from 48 to 64 starting with the 2030 tournament. To evaluate this move, the governing body plans to hire an independent agency to analyze the impact and value such a change would bring to the competition.

The proposal follows a suggestion from CONMEBOL, the South American football confederation, to allow for more matches to be played in South America during the 2030 edition. While Spain, Portugal, and Morocco are the primary hosts, Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay are set to host individual matches to commemorate the centenary of the first World Cup.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has expressed support for the expansion idea, though a final decision rests with the organization's Council and is expected by August 14. The move faces opposition from UEFA and the Asian Football Confederation, with UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin previously stating that expanding to 64 teams is not a good idea.
