FIFA reviews future of Peace Prize following Donald Trump award

FIFA is considering the abolition or restructuring of its Peace Prize following the controversial decision by President Gianni Infantino to award the inaugural honor to U.S. President Donald Trump in December 2025.

During a FIFA Council meeting in Zurich, officials decided to task the 22-member Football Social Responsibility Committee with evaluating the award's merit and future. The committee, which includes deputy chairperson Javier Zanetti, will determine whether to overhaul the prize or scrap it entirely. Concerns raised by council members include potential conflicts of interest, threats to the organization's credibility, and possible diplomatic tensions.

One proposed reform involves restricting the award exclusively to individuals within the football community who have contributed to social responsibility, potentially including a clause to prevent politicians from receiving the honor. This follows reports that the initial presentation to Trump, held during the 2026 Men’s World Cup draw in Washington, was a unilateral decision by Infantino that had not been formally approved by the FIFA Council.
