FIFA explains empty seats at 2026 World Cup match in Guadalajara

FIFA responded to visual reports of large numbers of empty seats during the South Korea‑Czech group‑stage match in Guadalajara, saying the official attendance figure of 44,985 (98.5% capacity) is based on "scanning tickets and counting everyone who entered the stadium area," not on the number of seats visibly occupied. The governing body added that many ticket‑holders chose to watch the game from concourse areas, especially around food stalls and screens, which made premium sections appear empty. Critics note that the most vacant seats were in the $400‑$5,000 premium and business boxes, highlighting concerns over high ticket prices for the 2026 tournament.

South Korean midfielder Hwang In‑beom, who scored and assisted in the victory over the Czech Republic, turned his focus to the upcoming Group A match against host nation Mexico on June 19. He praised the enthusiasm of Mexican fans, saying, "I really am excited, we are all very excited," and recalled the friendly ties between the two countries from the 2018 World Cup. Hwang expects a tough challenge and said South Korea will "do everything possible to win the three points."
