FIFA faces legal challenges and hosting rule controversies

Tensions are escalating between FIFA and UEFA as legal and political controversies surround FIFA President Gianni Infantino. Legal documents filed by UEFA in the United States allege that Infantino’s actions regarding the sale of commercial rights to private investors have reached the level of “criminal mismanagement” and represent a “staggering dereliction of duty.” UEFA officials argue the project was financially undervalued and could harm FIFA and its 211 members.

Simultaneously, reports have emerged regarding Mario Gallavotti, a close associate of Infantino, who allegedly attempted to bypass FIFA rules concerning World Cup hosting locations. Gallavotti reportedly lobbied for a joint Italy-Saudi Arabia bid for the 2030 World Cup to circumvent restrictions that prevent the tournament from being held in Asia so soon after Qatar 2022. Italy ultimately rejected the proposal, leading to claims that the nation is now viewed as a “hostile” association by Infantino’s administration.

As the FIFA Congress approaches in October, UEFA is considering whether to field a unified candidate to challenge Infantino in next year’s presidential election. UEFA Vice-President Laura McAllister emphasized that the future leader must prioritize transparency, independence, and the ability to unite the global football community.
