FIFA partially reduces sanctions for Argentina players after World Cup final

The FIFA Appeals Committee has partially granted an appeal by the Argentine Football Association (AFA) regarding disciplinary sanctions following the 2026 World Cup final between Spain and Argentina.

Nahuel Molina’s suspension has been reduced from seven matches to four, and his fine has been lowered from 90,000 to 60,000 dollars. However, the sanctions against Leandro Paredes remain unchanged, consisting of a 10-match suspension and a 90,000-dollar fine for his involvement in altercations with Spanish players, including Eric Garcia and Gavi.

The AFA also faces a confirmed fine of 321,000 dollars due to discriminatory chants and non-sporting demonstrations during the tournament. Other sanctions include a one-match suspension for Thiago Almada and a three-match ban for coaching staff member Roberto Ayala.

The AFA has announced its intention to appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) once it receives the full legal reasoning for FIFA’s decisions, stating it possesses sufficient factual and legal arguments for a review.
