FIFA President Gianni Infantino is facing a significant governance crisis following a failed proposal to sell a 20 percent stake in the commercial rights of FIFA tournaments to private investors. The plan, which aimed to raise approximately $4.2 billion, was abandoned after intense backlash from major football confederations.

UEFA, AFC, and CONCACAF have expressed a loss of confidence in Infantino's leadership, with UEFA even threatening a boycott of future FIFA competitions. Several European nations, including Ireland, England, Wales, and Norway, have formally withdrawn or distanced themselves from his re-election bid. The Football Association of Ireland (FAI) specifically cited concerns regarding transparency and governance.

In contrast, Infantino has received formal support from six Arab federations, including Qatar, Morocco, Egypt, Lebanon, Mauritania, and Sudan. Additionally, CAF President Patrice Motsepe has stated that Infantino's future should be decided democratically by the 211 member associations during the scheduled elections in March 2027. Meanwhile, Donald Trump has publicly defended Infantino, suggesting that replacing him would be a ‘grave error’.
