FIFA outlines tie‑break rules for 2026 World Cup groups

FIFA has published the detailed criteria for breaking ties in the group stage of the 2026 World Cup, which will be contested by 48 national teams in the United States, Canada and Mexico. If teams finish level on points, the first step looks at head‑to‑head results: points earned, goal difference and goals scored in matches between the tied teams. If still equal, overall group performance is considered, using overall goal difference, total goals scored and disciplinary record (yellow and red cards). As a last resort, the latest FIFA/Coca‑Cola world ranking is applied.

The same set of criteria also decides which eight third‑placed teams across the 12 groups will advance to the knockout round, using the same hierarchy of points, goal difference, goals scored, disciplinary record and finally the world ranking.
