FIFA President Gianni Infantino apologizes for controversial investment project

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has issued a formal apology to the FIFA Council for failures in the communication and consultation processes regarding the FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE) project. The controversial proposal, which sought to involve private investors in the commercial rights of FIFA competitions including the World Cup, has been definitively withdrawn following widespread criticism from major football bodies, including UEFA, Concacaf, and the Asian Football Confederation.

During a meeting in Zurich, Infantino acknowledged the shortcomings but maintained that the FFE was only a proposal and not a final decision. Despite the apology, senior officials from the English and German football associations expressed dissatisfaction. Debbie Hewitt, Chair of the Football Association, demanded transparency and written answers to outstanding questions, while German FA President Bernd Neuendorf called for comprehensive governance reforms, suggesting that trust in current leadership has been compromised.

In response to the controversy, FIFA introduced the FIFA Surplus Solidarity Programme as an alternative funding model. This initiative aims to utilize commercial surpluses to increase development funding for member associations to $6.35 billion for the 2027-2030 cycle. Additionally, FIFA announced the formation of a working group to review its governance framework as Infantino prepares for his re-election in March 2027.
