FIFA drops World Cup stake‑sale plan after worldwide federation backlash FAST-MOVING

FIFA President Gianni Infantino proposed creating a $20 billion commercial subsidiary, FIFA Forward Enterprise, to manage the World Cup and other tournaments and to sell up to 20 percent of its shares to private investors, a move that could raise about $4.2 billion. The plan was met with strong opposition from the sport’s continental bodies. UEFA’s 55 member associations voted unanimously to boycott all FIFA competitions unless the proposal is abandoned. The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) called the plan “unacceptable” and said it was not consulted. CONCACAF also rejected the proposal, describing it as lacking transparency. Several senior officials resigned in protest, most notably Carlos Cordeiro, Infantino’s senior adviser. After weeks of pressure and a deadline of 19 September for member‑association approval, Infantino announced on 1 August 2026 that FIFA would not proceed with the project. The decision ends a dispute that threatened the 2027 Women’s World Cup in Brazil and the 2030 Men’s World Cup, and restores the status quo for future FIFA tournaments.
