FIFA President Gianni Infantino faces mounting pressure and investigations

FIFA President Gianni Infantino is facing significant scrutiny from both financial allegations and institutional opposition. Former Cameroon Football Federation executive committee member Jibe Gatama has accused FIFA of negligence regarding allegations against Cameroon federation president Samuel Eto’o. Gatama claims that approximately 567,570 euros, intended for the Cameroon Football Federation, was instead deposited into Eto’o’s personal bank account in Qatar following a friendly match in October 2023. Gatama has called for an independent investigation and the temporary suspension of Eto’o, warning that he will target Infantino if the complaint remains unaddressed.

Simultaneously, Infantino is facing intense criticism from football executives regarding a proposed plan to sell up to 20 percent of FIFA’s commercial rights, including broadcasting and ticketing, to private investment funds. The project, valued at an estimated 20 billion dollars, met fierce resistance from European, Asian, and North American federations who argued the assets were being undervalued. While Infantino apologized for communication failures during a FIFA Council meeting in Zurich, leaders such as England FA chief Debbie Hewitt have stated the apology is insufficient, demanding full transparency and the release of all negotiation documents. UEFA is currently pursuing legal action to compel the disclosure of these documents.
