FIFA President Gianni Infantino faces U.S. congressional scrutiny over Trump ties

The U.S. House of Representatives Judiciary Committee minority, led by Representative Jamie Raskin, is investigating the relationship between FIFA President Gianni Infantino and the administration of Donald Trump. Democratic lawmakers have criticized FIFA for what they describe as “sadly insufficient” cooperation regarding requests for documents and information.

In July, Raskin requested all communications and documents related to Trump, his administration, and the Trump Organization. The inquiry seeks to clarify potential financial ties, including the use of Trump-owned properties by FIFA and the awarding of a peace prize to Trump. Additionally, lawmakers are examining the “Kushner-Infantino plan” regarding the sale of World Cup stakes and whether FIFA benefited from favorable treatment ahead of the upcoming World Cup in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico.

While Raskin currently lacks the authority to compel Infantino to testify, Democrats noted that they could gain subpoena power if they regain a majority in the House. FIFA has stated it has had “productive conversations” with House staff, though lawmakers claim prioritized documents have yet to be delivered.
