FIFA releases technical report on 2026 World Cup tactical trends

FIFA has released a comprehensive technical report analyzing all 104 matches from the 2026 World Cup held in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Compiled by the Technical Study Group and the FIFA Football Performance Insights Department, the report highlights significant tactical shifts in the modern game.

A defining trend identified was counter-pressing, with champions Spain noted for their ability to turn lost possession into immediate attacking opportunities. The analysis also noted the evolving role of goalkeepers, who are increasingly acting as active playmakers in the build-up phase to help teams overcome opposition pressure.

The report concludes that there is no single winning formula for success. While some teams utilized aggressive high presses, others found success through disciplined low blocks and rapid transitions. For example, Cabo Verde demonstrated how compact defending and collective organization could allow them to compete against technically superior opponents. Additionally, the report observed that while many teams utilized a three-player defense, this did not guarantee success, as none of the eight teams using that formation reached the quarter-finals.
