FIFA report identifies tactical trends in 2026 World Cup

FIFA has released a post-tournament report for the 2026 World Cup, analyzing all 104 matches to identify key tactical innovations and player role evolutions.

A primary trend identified is “counter-pressing,” described as a double-edged sword where top teams successfully convert lost possession into immediate attacking opportunities. The report also highlights the evolving role of goalkeepers, who are increasingly acting as active participants in the build-up phase and serving as solutions to bypass opponent pressure.

The analysis, conducted by FIFA’s Technical Study Group and Football Performance Insights Department, suggests there is no single formula for success. Instead, the tournament showcased diverse paths to victory, ranging from aggressive high pressing to disciplined low-block defending and rapid transitions.
