FIFA reviews Peace Prize following Donald Trump award controversy
The FIFA Council has decided to review the FIFA Peace Prize following controversy surrounding its presentation to U.S. President Donald Trump. The decision, made during a meeting in Zurich, has resulted in the matter being referred to the Football Social Responsibility Committee for an exhaustive review.
The award was presented by FIFA President Gianni Infantino to Trump in December 2025 during the 2026 World Cup draw in Washington, D.C. FIFA originally cited Trump’s role in peace efforts between Israel and Palestine as the basis for the honor. However, the move faced significant backlash for potentially violating FIFA’s strict principles of political neutrality.
Internal concerns have also been raised regarding governance, as reports indicate the award was not formally approved by the FIFA Council before being granted. The committee is now tasked with determining whether the prize should be abolished, modified—such as by banning politicians from receiving it—or if the current mechanism should be maintained. A final decision is expected by December 2026.
