FIFA suspends Egypt coach and players over World Cup controversy

FIFA has issued disciplinary sanctions against three members of the Egyptian national team following their Round of 16 exit against Argentina at the 2026 World Cup. The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) confirmed that head coach Hossam Hassan and team director Ibrahim Hassan have each received three-match suspensions.

Forward Mostafa Zico received a more severe five-match ban. The sanctions stem from the intense controversy following Egypt's 3-2 defeat, where the team surrendered a 2-0 lead. The disciplinary actions were triggered by Hossam Hassan's confrontational gestures toward referee François Letexier and his subsequent allegations that the match was “rigged” to ensure Lionel Messi's victory.

Zico was also penalized for insulting the officiating crew during post-match interviews, where he claimed the tournament was “fixed.” The EFA has formally requested the detailed grounds for these decisions from FIFA's Disciplinary Committee to evaluate the legal basis for a potential appeal.
