FIFA to Expand Club World Cup to 48 Teams for 2029 Edition

FIFA announced plans to enlarge the Club World Cup from its current format to a 48‑team competition starting in 2029, mirroring the expansion used for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The governing body is working closely with UEFA to design qualification procedures and to ensure competitive balance across confederations. The tournament is slated for the traditional June‑July window, with matches expected to be hosted in various venues worldwide.

The prize fund for the champions will rise to roughly €150 million, up from the €128 million awarded to Chelsea after the 2022 edition. FIFA says the larger field and higher financial rewards aim to boost the tournament’s global profile, attract broader broadcast and marketing revenues, and further integrate club football into its worldwide strategy. The decision follows the strong commercial and fan‑engagement performance of the 2026 World Cup held in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
