FIFA World Cup social media data shows influencer vs media trends
Data from the FIFA World Cup hosted in Canada, Mexico, and the United States reveals distinct social media engagement patterns between influencers and traditional media companies.
On TikTok, influencer content dominated in volume, amassing 16.3 billion views across 244,000 videos. However, media companies demonstrated higher efficiency, generating 4.7 billion views from only 15,000 videos. While influencers posted 16 times more content, they produced only 3.5 times more views than media outlets, suggesting that editorial authority and distribution infrastructure remain significant force multipliers.
The tournament also served as a broad cultural phenomenon beyond sports. On Instagram, non-sports publishers in North America generated 1.6 billion views by focusing on fan culture and national quirks.
