FIFA World Cup tops Nigeria’s Google searches for early 2026
Google Trends data reveals that the FIFA World Cup was the most searched topic in Nigeria between January and July 2026, generating search volumes significantly higher than any other major event. Nigerians closely followed the Super Eagles’ campaign, tournament performances, and major matches.
Other major drivers of search interest included the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), particularly following the Super Eagles’ semi-final defeat to Morocco. The Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics also attracted substantial interest in February.
Geopolitical tensions also influenced search activity, with increased queries regarding Iran, Israel, and the Strait of Hormuz due to concerns over Middle East stability and global oil prices. Additionally, domestic interest was driven by the controversy involving cryptocurrency entrepreneur Blord and social media activist VeryDarkMan, which peaked following Blord’s arrest and subsequent release on bail in April.
