FIFA Extends 2026 World Cup Final Halftime to Up to 25 Minutes

FIFA is planning to extend the halftime interval of the 2026 World Cup final in East Rutherford, New York‑New Jersey, from the standard 15 minutes to roughly 20–25 minutes. The longer break will accommodate an 11‑minute Super Bowl‑style entertainment segment and additional time for stage setup and takedown.

The halftime show will feature a line‑up of global music stars that includes Madonna, Shakira, K‑pop group BTS, Justin Bieber, Burna Boy, Venezuelan conductor Gustavo Dudamel and a performance curated by Coldplay frontman Chris Martin, with additional appearances by the PS22 school chorus and other guests such as Laura Pausini, Nicole Scherzinger, Robbie Williams, Tom Cruise and IShowSpeed. FIFA says the revenue from the spectacle could reach up to $100 million, earmarked for its Global Citizen Education Fund.

The move conflicts with the International Football Association Board’s rule that a halftime break may not exceed 15 minutes without referee approval. FIFA President Gianni Infantino described the event as “the biggest show in the world” and indicated the organization will proceed despite the rule‑keeping concerns. Critics, including former players, argue the extended pause could affect player rhythm and safety.
