FIFPRO and FIFA seal historic pact to reform global football transfers

The global players' union FIFPRO and football's governing body FIFA have signed a new memorandum of cooperation that will run until 2031. The agreement creates a worldwide platform for social dialogue, giving players a formal role in decisions on transfer regulations. Key provisions include the introduction of release clauses in contracts, stronger protection against abusive practices, and tougher sanctions for clubs that violate obligations. Players earning up to €150,000 a year will receive at least 5 % of any international transfer fee in which they are involved, and the FIFA Fund for Players will be renewed.

Implementation of the new rules is slated for 1 January 2027, marking what the parties describe as a milestone for a more balanced and participatory governance model in football worldwide.
