FIFPRO urges stronger protection for players amid rising abuse at FIFA World Cup 2026

The global football players’ union FIFPRO, representing more than 70 players’ associations, issued a collective call to action during the FIFA World Cup 2026, which is being staged across the United States, Mexico and Canada. It warned that a growing pattern of online and in‑person abuse – including racist and discriminatory harassment – is affecting players both on and off the pitch.

FIFPRO said the abuse extends beyond match coverage to the broader media environment and the pressures of tournament elimination. It appealed to FIFA, national authorities, social‑media platforms, broadcasters, clubs and fans to intensify protective measures, enforce significant consequences for perpetrators and ensure the safety, dignity and well‑being of players. The union will raise the issue within FIFA’s newly created Global Social Dialogue Platform under its memorandum of understanding with the governing body.

The statement emphasizes that while some steps have been taken, supervision and reporting alone are insufficient, and a coordinated effort across all stakeholders is required to reverse the trend.
