Fifth man charged in Essex people-smuggling investigation

A fifth man has been charged in connection with an alleged people-smuggling operation following an incident on the Essex coast. Fation Kalemaj, a 44-year-old Albanian national, appeared before Bradford Magistrates’ Court on August 11 and has been remanded in custody. He is scheduled to appear at Bradford Crown Court on September 10.

The charges stem from an incident on July 1 near Holland-on-Sea, where a vessel reportedly dropped off several individuals along the shoreline. Six Albanian nationals were detained for immigration offences following the arrival.

Kalemaj is the fifth individual charged in this investigation. Previous charges include: - Illia Prendi, 57, an Albanian national. - Konrad Dabrowski, 25, and Damian Ciuron, 41, both Polish nationals from Bradford, who were arrested by Essex Police. - Christian Albano, 45, an Italian national, who was apprehended at sea by the Border Security Command with support from HM Coastguard.

The suspects were questioned by the National Crime Agency and face charges of facilitating illegal immigration under the Immigration Act 1971. The other four men are due to appear at Chelmsford Crown Court on September 3.
