Pear Lake wildfire forces Clinton evacuation in British Columbia
On July 24, 2026, the Thompson‑Nicola Regional District ordered the evacuation of about 600 residents of the Village of Clinton and nearby properties along Highway 97 because the Pearson Lake wildfire, discovered on July 17, had grown to roughly 3,185 ha. The fire, believed to be lightning‑caused, displayed Rank 4 behaviour with intermittent crown fire and rapid eastward spread driven by southwest winds. An Emergency Support Services centre was opened at the McArthur Island Sports Complex in Kamloops for displaced residents. The evacuation was expanded to additional properties west of Clinton, and the nearby Kelly Lake substation – which supplies power to the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island – was threatened, prompting BC Hydro to warn of possible flickering lights and brief power interruptions. Across the province, about 90 wildfires are burning, causing further power disruptions and prompting travel advisories on Highway 97. Authorities continue to monitor the situation and urge residents to comply with evacuation orders and avoid drones near fire zones.
