Figs: Seasonal culinary uses and recipes

As the fig season peaks, various culinary applications for the fruit are being highlighted, ranging from simple appetizers to complex preserves and vegan dishes.

For quick preparations, ripe figs can be paired with blue cheese, walnuts, and honey for a five-minute appetizer. For longer-term enjoyment, figs can be transformed into jams or preserves. Methods include making a sugar-free jam using only the fruit's natural sugars, citrus zest, and water, or creating a spiced fig and walnut jam by macerating the fruit with spices like cinnamon or cloves.

In vegan cooking, figs serve as a versatile ingredient for both sweet and savory dishes. Examples include pappardelle with radicchio, fig, and seitan sauce, yogurt cheesecake with fresh fig pieces, and hazelnut crumble tarts. Dried figs also offer utility for making vegan biscuits filled with fig jam.
