Giovanni Malagò says Italy’s national team technical director appointment may be a surprise

On July 9, 2024 the president of the Italian Football Federation, Giovanni Malagò, said the search for a new technical director of the Italy men’s national side is still underway and could result in an unexpected choice. He told reporters, “Potrebbe anche esserci una sorpresa,” indicating that the federation may appoint someone not previously linked to the role.

Malagò also noted that the overall technical structure, including the future head coach (commissario tecnico), is being finalised. Speaking on the 20‑year anniversary of Italy’s 2006 World Cup victory, he urged pride, energy and responsibility from all involved in the national team project.
