FIGC Prosecutor moves to archive Arbitropoli investigation

The FIGC Federal Prosecutor's Office, led by Giuseppe Chinè, is reportedly moving toward archiving the “Arbitropoli” investigation without imposing sanctions. This follows a similar direction taken by the Milan Prosecutor's Office, which investigated potential sports fraud but found no grounds for criminal charges.

After reviewing intercepted communications and interviewing various referees, federal investigators have not identified sufficient evidence of disciplinary violations or external interference in refereeing decisions. While some conversations involving Andrea Butti, Head of Competitions and Operations for Lega Serie A, were deemed inappropriate, they did not constitute regulatory breaches.

A final decision is expected in September. Despite the potential closure of the investigation, changes are anticipated within the refereeing sector under the leadership of Daniele Orsato, particularly regarding the management of referees and the use of VAR technology.
