FIH Women's Hockey World Cup begins with Argentina draw and Chile loss
The FIH Hockey Women's World Cup 2026 has commenced with opening matches in Belgium and the Netherlands.
In Belgium, Argentina's Las Leonas drew 1-1 against the United States. Brisa Bruggesser opened the scoring for Argentina in the first quarter, but Emma DeBerdine equalized for the Americans in the second. Despite a defensive shift from Argentina late in the match, the result extended their unbeaten streak against the U.S. in World Cups to seven matches.
In the Netherlands, Chile's Diablas faced the defending world champions, the Netherlands. After a strong defensive performance led by goalkeeper Natalia Salvador, the Dutch broke the deadlock in the second quarter when Marijn Veen scored following a combination with Yibbi Jansen, resulting in a 1-0 lead for the hosts.
