Fiji civil society warns of risks in rushed constitutional changes

Civil society groups in Fiji are expressing concern that the government may be rushing constitutional changes. The Rabuka-led administration has suggested a new constitution could be finalized by Christmas Eve, following the Cabinet's endorsement of the Constitution Review Commission’s report.

Leading organizations, including the Centre for Democracy and Dialogue and the Fiji Women’s Rights Movement, have warned that an accelerated process could risk a ‘self-coup’ if it results in extending the term of Parliament beyond its current democratic mandate. While general elections are due by February 2027, the government has not yet set a specific date.

These groups are calling on Members of Parliament to reject any timetable that threatens the existing electoral framework. They have requested that any major changes to the electoral system include transitional provisions to ensure the next election proceeds under current rules, and that the public is given sufficient time and information before any referendum occurs.
