Fiji Constitutional Review Commission proposes major changes
The Fiji Constitutional Review Commission has submitted a draft report to President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, proposing significant changes to the nation’s 2013 Constitution. Key recommendations include the reinstatement of the Senate as the upper house of Parliament and the return of the Bose Levu Vakaturaga.
The Commission also suggests reinstating the Public Service Commission to oversee public service matters. The proposal aims to address criticisms of the 2013 Constitution, which some leaders have labeled as unrepresentative or anti-indigenous. The draft includes reviews of fundamental rights, the judiciary, electoral systems, and indigenous Fijian and Rotuman rights.
The recommendations follow a six-month review process involving nationwide consultations. The Commission received 1,220 submissions from various individuals, villages, and organizations, and conducted face-to-face consultations at 105 venues across the country.
