Fiji expands agricultural exports to Nauru and Australia

Fiji is expanding its agricultural export footprint through new initiatives in the Pacific and growing demand in Australia. A second pilot consignment of export-quality produce was recently sent to the Republic of Nauru via Nauru Airlines. This shipment is part of the Pacific Fresh AirLink (PFAL) initiative, which aims to improve food security in Pacific communities while providing Fijian farmers with new markets. The program is a collaboration involving the Pacific Islands Development Forum (PIDF) and New Valley Processors (Fiji) Limited.

Simultaneously, Fiji is dominating the Australian kava market. Last year, Fiji supplied over 100,000 kilograms of kava to Australia, which saw total commercial imports of 170,000 kilograms. To manage this growth, the Fijian government is proposing legislation to regulate the industry, aiming to protect farmers and ensure quality standards as the sector becomes a more significant economic contributor.
