Fiji Government Plans New Vessels to Upgrade Maritime Services

The Fiji government is reviewing its shipping sector as its fleet of about eight government-owned vessels ages and struggles to meet growing demand across the islands. Minister for Public Works and Transport Ro Filipe Tuisawau said the review will consider new vessel acquisitions, a possible transformation of the government shipping unit into a state‑owned enterprise, and ways to improve connectivity for maritime communities.

Fiji is working with the Japanese government on a multipurpose ship that could also serve national disaster‑management needs. Opposition MP Jone Usamate called for the government to retain its own fleet to provide support when private operators face challenges.
