Fiji Health Ministry warns of rising respiratory illness and misinformation

The Fiji Ministry of Health and Medical Services has issued an advisory following an increase in reported respiratory illness activity. According to the Flu Tracking Fiji Weekly Interim Report for the period of 31 August to 6 September, the percentage of participants reporting fever and cough rose to 16.4 percent, up from 10.2 percent the previous week.

Assistant Health Minister Penioni Ravunawa noted that while the increase is a significant surveillance signal, the current participant numbers are low and not necessarily representative of the entire population. The data indicates a rise in symptoms but does not confirm a specific virus as the cause. The Ministry encourages those with symptoms to practice good hygiene, such as washing hands and staying home when unwell, and to seek medical attention if symptoms are severe.

Additionally, the Ministry warned against the spread of misinformation on social media regarding viruses, outbreaks, and treatments. Officials urged the public to verify health information with reliable authorities before sharing to prevent unnecessary fear and confusion.
