Fiji economic developments: tourism investment and debt projections

Fiji is managing several significant economic shifts, including a massive tourism investment pipeline and rising public debt. Tourism Minister Viliame Gavoka announced 57 investment projects valued at over $2 billion, which are expected to add 5,613 hotel rooms to the country. While 19 projects are currently under construction, the majority are in pre-development or conceptual stages.

On the fiscal front, Finance Minister Esrom Immanuel projected that Fiji’s public debt will reach $12.6 billion by July 2027. As of September 2026, debt stood at $11.6 billion. Despite the increase in total debt, the debt-to-GDP ratio has reportedly fallen from 81 percent to 78.4 percent due to economic growth.

Additionally, the outsourcing industry is seeking to expand beyond major urban centers like Suva, Nadi, and Lautoka. Driven by 5G connectivity and improved telecommunications, the sector aims to increase its workforce from 9,500 to 15,000 employees by 2030. Meanwhile, the government is addressing a skills gap in the tourism and construction sectors to ensure local workers can meet the demand for skilled tradespeople.
