Fiji Rugby appoints Jake White as head coach for 2027 World Cup

The Fiji Rugby Union has appointed Jake White as the new head coach of the men’s national team, the Flying Fijians. White, a South African who led the Springboks to a Rugby World Cup title in 2007, was selected from a field of over 30 candidates, including Warren Gatland.

White succeeds interim coach Senirusi Seruvakula, who took over following the departure of Mick Byrne in April. White’s tenure is focused on preparing the squad for the 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia. His immediate schedule includes a centenary Test match against Japan in Tokyo on October 24, 2026, followed by the November Nations Championship featuring matches against France, Ireland, and Italy.

White expressed his commitment to building trust and unity within the squad, citing the Fijian principle of ‘soria soribaki’ as a guiding philosophy for collective commitment. Fiji Rugby Chairman John Sanday noted that White’s championship mentality is essential for the team to move beyond being mere participants and instead become serious competitors on the world stage.
