Fijian boxer Jasmine Daunakamakama wins historic Commonwealth Games bronze

Jasmine Daunakamakama, a 21‑year‑old boxer, became the first female to represent Fiji at the Commonwealth Games and secured a bronze medal in the women’s 57 kg division in Glasgow. After defeating opponents from Ghana and Sri Lanka, she faced Northern Ireland’s defending champion Michaela Walsh in the semifinal, losing by unanimous decision but still earning a place on the podium.

Daunakamakama, who has been boxing for only three years and has fought over 100 bouts, said the medal was a “bonus” to a journey built on personal growth, resilience and the support of her family, coaches and teammates. Her achievement adds to Fiji’s modest Commonwealth Games boxing history and is expected to inspire more Pacific Island women to take up the sport.
