A corrections officer at the Lautoka Remand Centre in Fiji has been charged with assault following an incident involving an Australian inmate. Security footage, which surfaced recently on social media and local news, shows the inmate being dragged by his clothing through sleeping quarters on June 14, 2026, before being struck and thrown to the ground.

Asaeli Sorovaki, the officer involved, appeared at the Lautoka Magistrates Court and was granted bail on a $F1000 non-cash bond. Sorovaki has expressed a willingness to reconcile with the victim, with a formal reconciliation hearing scheduled for September 7.

The Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) has suspended three senior officers in the Western Division as part of an ongoing investigation. While the circumstances of the initial confrontation remain unclear, the FCS stated that the Australian inmate did not sustain serious injuries. The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade is currently providing consular assistance to the inmate.
