Fijian Teachers Association head sparks controversy with threats
Paula Manumanunitoga, the general secretary of the Fijian Teachers Association, has sparked political controversy following profanity-laden social media remarks. In a Facebook post addressing the ongoing constitutional reform debate, Manumanunitoga defended the role of iTaukei chiefs and issued a threat to critics, stating, “So shut the [expletive] up and mind your own business before we catch you and roast you in earth ovens !!!!”
Political leaders have condemned the comments as “disgraceful,” “disturbing,” and “racially divisive.” While the Fijian government has not yet issued a formal statement, the Fiji Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission has responded to the rising tension. Commissioner Alefina Vuki warned against the use of hate speech, threats, and racial intolerance during this critical period in Fiji’s constitutional history.
The Commission emphasized that while freedom of expression is a fundamental right, it must not be used to justify personal attacks, intimidation, or incitement to violence. Vuki urged influential figures and public office holders to take responsibility for their words on social media to prevent community division.
