Filevine to introduce semantic legal research tools

Filevine, a legal AI company led by Ryan Anderson, is set to introduce semantic “shepherdization” on September 1. This new capability aims to advance legal research by identifying semantic similarities in court reasoning, even when specific cases are not explicitly cited by other courts.

This development positions Filevine’s Legal Operating Intelligence System (LOIS) as a competitor to established industry giants LexisNexis and Westlaw. While traditional tools like Shepard’s and Keycite focus on following specific citations through legal histories, Filevine’s approach focuses on the underlying reasoning of legal precedents.
