Filip Gaćina: Remembering the defender of Šibenik

Filip Gaćina, a Croatian defender whose enthusiastic exclamation 'Obadva, obadva! Oba su pala!' became a symbol of the 1991 Homeland War, is being remembered following the anniversary of his death.

During the defense of the Šibenik region on September 21, 1991, Gaćina, then 22, witnessed the shoot-down of two Yugoslav People's Army (JNA) aircraft. The event was captured on film by HRT cameraman Ivica Bilan. The aircraft were downed by Goran Pauk using a 20 mm anti-aircraft gun and Neven Livajić using a Strijela 2M system.

Gaćina died seven years later, in 1998, while working as a pyrotechnician in a minefield near Pridraga. Family members and former comrades recently gathered to pay their respects at the site of his death, laying wreaths and lighting candles to honor his memory.
