Filipe Luis appointed head coach of AS Monaco
Brazilian former left‑back Filipe Luis has been confirmed as the new head coach of AS Monaco, signing a contract that runs to June 2028. He replaces the Belgian Sébastien Pocognoli, who left after a seven‑month spell, and follows a period of instability that saw Monaco finish seventh in Ligue 1 in the 2025‑26 season and miss the Champions League, relegating the club to the Europa Conference qualifiers.
Luis arrives after a successful, albeit brief, tenure at Flamengo, where he guided the Brazilian side to a domestic double, the Campeonato Carioca, and a Copa Libertadores triumph. His résumé also includes a distinguished playing career with Atlético Madrid and Chelsea. The appointment is complicated by his current CONMEBOL coaching licence; Monaco may have to pay a fine of up to €25,000 per match if a UEFA Pro licence is not granted, though equivalence procedures are underway.
Monaco hopes Luis’s experience and tactical approach will restore stability and return the club to contention for the Ligue 1 title and European competition.
