Filipino American History Month celebrated through culture and cuisine

October marks Filipino American History Month, a period recognized by the State of California since 2009 to honor the culture and history of Filipino Americans.

At Cal Poly Pomona, the student association Barkada hosted various events to celebrate, including a traditional Boodle Fight feast and performances of traditional Filipino dances. The organization, founded in 1980, focuses on four pillars: academics, culture, athletics, and social engagement. Their annual Friendship Games bring together various Filipino organizations across California for athletic competition.

In the San Francisco Peninsula region, local eateries are highlighting Filipino flavors in observance of the month. Featured establishments include Russ Fam Kitchen in Daly City, known for Ilocos-style empanadas and street foods, and Auntie Em’s Fine Foods in South San Francisco.
