Filippo Gazzaneo stages rare Eduardo De Filippo play in San Severino Lucano
On July 26, the historic centre of San Severino Lucano in southern Italy was turned into an open‑air stage along Via Orazio Flacco. Directed by Professor Filippo Gazzaneo, a local theatre group and the Association La Razza Nostra presented a newly adapted version of Eduardo De Filippo’s previously unpublished 1936 work “Occhio alle ragazze!”. The production featured original music by Giovanni d’Agostino and Nicola Carlomagno and was staged in the courtyard of the Mele family house, a landmark in the town. The event was supported by the Pro Loco del Pollino and the municipality, highlighting the community’s cultural heritage.
The play, set in a fictional family, followed the anxieties of a widowed mother and the protective duties of her son Gerolamo amid marital disputes. Though performed by amateur actors rather than professionals, the performance was praised by local residents for breathing new life into a forgotten piece of Italian theatre.
