Fillongley residents use knitted police and speed cameras to deter speeding

Residents of Fillongley, Warwickshire, have launched a creative road safety campaign using life-sized knitted figures and mock speed cameras to slow down motorists. The initiative was organized by the local ‘Knit and Natter’ group following a series of accidents near a primary school.

The installations include mannequins dressed in high-visibility vests and knitted speed cameras positioned near 30 mph signs. While the devices do not record data or issue fines, they are designed to mimic real traffic enforcement to encourage drivers to decelerate. Local officials report that the deterrent appears to be working, noting that drivers frequently apply their brakes upon seeing the realistic-looking figures.

According to Warwickshire County Council, eleven collisions have been recorded over a four-year period at the specific junction on Nuneaton Road. The community action comes as residents expressed frustration over the time required to implement permanent safety solutions.
