Film festivals honor Paulo Branco and Brazilian cinema

The 50th edition of the São Paulo International Film Festival will honor Portuguese producer Paulo Branco with the Leon Cakoff Prize. The festival, running from October 15 to 29, will feature a selection of his films, including works such as ‘Silvestre’ (1981), ‘Francisca’ (1981), and ‘O Estado das Coisas’ (1982). Recent productions by Branco, such as ‘O Barqueiro’, ‘Memórias do Cárcere’, and ‘Aquí’, will also be screened.

Separately, Brazil has been named the Guest of Honor at the 47th International Festival of New Latin American Cinema in Havana, scheduled for December 3 to 13. The event will celebrate Brazilian cinematography, highlighting the legacy of creators who have received the Coral de Honor award, including Jorge Amado, Nelson Pereira dos Santos, Ruy Guerra, and Carlos Cacá Diegues. The festival's academic focus this year will center on the integration of artificial intelligence in film production.
