Film franchises and the impact of sequels on cinematic legacies
Discussions regarding film franchises highlight the varying success of sequels in maintaining or diminishing a series' reputation. Some franchises, such as Alien, have experienced significant fluctuations in quality. After the initial success of the 1979 original and 1986's Aliens, the series faced a period of decline with Alien 3 and Alien: Resurrection, as well as the Alien vs. Predator films. However, the franchise saw a resurgence with Ridley Scott's Prometheus and Alien: Covenant, followed by the 2024 release Alien: Romulus.
Conversely, other successful films are often viewed by fans as having sequels that should be ignored. Examples include The Matrix, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, and Highlander, where subsequent entries are seen as complicating or diminishing the original's impact. Similarly, the Speed sequel is regarded as a failure, and many argue that the Jurassic Park franchise's legacy has been weakened by a string of poor follow-ups.
