Film industry sees record summer box office and rising attendance

The film industry is seeing a significant resurgence in theater attendance and revenue. In North America, the summer of 2026 has set a new historical record, generating approximately 4.76 billion dollars in revenue across the United States and Canada. This surpasses the previous record set in 2013. Key contributors to this success include Spider-Man: A New Day, which earned over 923 million dollars domestically, and Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey.

In Europe, specifically in the Grand Est and Moselle regions of France, cinema operators are reporting a similar recovery. Sandrine Gremillet, regional director for Kinépolis, noted that this summer was the best since the Covid-19 pandemic. The recovery follows a period of instability caused by health restrictions, Hollywood strikes, and competition from streaming platforms. Gremillet suggested that the crisis appeared to be cyclical rather than structural, noting that “when there is supply, there is demand.” Additionally, extreme heatwaves may have encouraged some viewers to seek refuge in air-conditioned theaters.
