Film ‘Other Mommy’ receives poor reviews following release

The horror film ‘Other Mommy’, starring Jessica Chastain, has received critical backlash following its release. Based loosely on Josh Malerman’s 2024 novel ‘Incidents Around the House’, the movie follows an eight-year-old girl named Bela who faces a paranormal threat from a demonic entity attempting to inhabit her body.

Critics have noted significant deviations from the source material, suggesting the film lacks the subtlety and suspense found in the book. While the novel utilizes an uncertain perspective to build dread, reviewers argue the film explicitly identifies the antagonist as a demon early on, reducing the psychological tension.

Despite a viral trailer that generated high expectations, the film currently holds a 17% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. While some viewers noted the film’s psychological elements regarding family instability and parental secrets, the general consensus points toward a disappointing adaptation.
